Agriculture organisation Free State Agriculture (FSA) met with members of the executive council (MECs) in the province to highlight increasing crime affecting communities and farmers on the border between South Africa and Lesotho.

The challenges include illegal crossing routes into Lesotho which are used by criminals to commit various crimes including livestock theft; cross-border grazing; and Basotho nationals who, along with their unbranded animals, are found on the common lands of many border towns.

FSA met with Free State Community Safety MEC Jabu Mbalula, Free State Agriculture MEC Elzabé Rockman, the South African Police Service (Saps), the South African National Defence Force, the Border Management Authority and the House of Traditional Leaders.

The significant security concerns were highlighted and were also submitted to the Saps rural safety summit, says FSA president Francois Wilken.

Mbalula plans to visit the border areas soon to engage with farming communities in all the border towns.

Further, the need for construction of animal pounds or enclosures, the absence of a border road and the lack of effective mobile networks were also discussed. Urgent intervention is planned to address these issues, FSA says.

All stakeholders agree that greater and improved cooperation is necessary to enhance border security, says FSA rural safety committee chairperson Jakkals le Roux.
